What happens when refugee status recedes but resettlement does not? Drawing on nearly a decade of ethnographic research with Cambodian American youth in Philadelphia, Linda Pheng discusses her book project and the concept she calls the educational afterlife of refugee resettlement. In this talk, she examines how schools impose narrow expectations of Asian American achievement on the children of refugees, and what young people make of themselves and their communities when those expectations collide with the consequences of resettlement.
