Biography
Over the past 14 years, Dr. Whitfield-Mendez has served in a variety of educational leadership roles across Philadelphia and Camden, including elementary literacy practitioner, curriculum developer, instructional coach, and systems-level leader. Her work focuses on helping schools and organizations create humanizing, equitable, and academically rigorous environments where both young people and adults can thrive.
In addition to her leadership practice, Dr. Whitfield-Mendez is an independent scholar. She earned her Ed.D. in Reading, Writing, and Literacy from Penn GSE. Her dissertation, Being “Risky and Dangerous” Together: Exploring Early Elementary Teachers’ Critical Literacy Spaces, examined how K–2 teachers design learning experiences that support students in engaging thoughtfully with complex social issues and how school leaders cultivate the conditions, supports, and professional environments necessary for that deeply humanizing work to flourish.
Dr. Whitfield-Mendez’s research and professional interests sit at the intersection of leadership, emotional intelligence, literacy, equity, and adult learning. She is particularly interested in how leaders develop adult capacity, cultivate humanizing systems, and create the organizational conditions that enable transformational learning, belonging, and thriving for both students and educators.
